    History overview
The name Artiglio evokes the Viareggio divers and their enterprises...

...they were simple, modest people who, as somebody has written, through their deeds rendered boldness, work, genius, poetry eternal.

With the creation of this Award the Viareggio Versilia Rotary Club, intends to remember them, while looking to the future. .
YEAR 1930

Winter weather caused the Artiglio to suspend operations on the Egypt until next summer. The salvage ship went south to Belle Ile, in the Quiberon Bay, working in an attempt to destroy the wreck of the Florence H., an U.S. freighter sunk in 1918 with a cargo of 5,000 tons of explosives. Suddenly the sea rose like a bubble, burst with a deafening roar into towers of spray. The little Artiglio was tossed in the air like a child's toy, broke in two, sank instantly. Only seven of her crew of 21 were picked up alive. Threee of the world's most famous divers, Alberto Gianni, Aristide Franceschi and Alberto Bargellini and one sailor, Romualdo Cortopassi, all from Viareggio, lost their lives together with the rest of the crew. .
