    History overview
The name Artiglio evokes the Viareggio divers and their enterprises...

...they were simple, modest people who, as somebody has written, through their deeds rendered boldness, work, genius, poetry eternal.

With the creation of this Award the Viareggio Versilia Rotary Club, intends to remember them, while looking to the future.

On May 22, the Egypt, a P.& O. 8000-ton English liner, while navigating in the fog across the Bay of Biscay, some 40 miles north west of the French mainland, was rammed between the funnels by the French steamer Seine. The Egypt heeled over from the impact and sank in 20 minutes, with a loss of 92 lives. In her strong room, at a depth of 130 meters (426 feet), were 8 tons of gold and 40 tons of silver. Egypt
