    Initiatives and projects



The Artiglio International Foundation has, as its main initiative, the care and development of the Artiglio International Award, arrived at its 4th Edition in 2007. It also intends to actuate, in the yearly intervals between the Awards, other sea-connected initiatives.

Main realized initiatives:

  • 1st, 2nd 3rd Edition of the Artiglio International Award, with relevant Shows and Forums


  • show “Memorie dall’Abisso” (Memories from the Abyss) from 11/12/2004 to 31/01/2005 at the Historical Maritime Museum of Viareggio


  • recovery, in 2005, of the propeller and rudder of the 1st Artiglio ship, sunk on Dec. 7th, 1930, in the Quiberon Bay in Bretagne (France). These finds (recovered by di Sauro Sodini) have been placed in the square facing Historical Maritime Museum of Viareggio


  • participation to meetings and congresses (Palermo – Genoa – Lugano), to competitions for realization of historical movies (HDS Italia, Antibes – France) and to shows (Eudishow)

Main initiatives programmed for 2007 and for the subsequent years:

  • Reprinting of the following books by David Scott, no longer available:

- “Con i Palombari dell’Artiglio” (With the Artiglio Divers)
- “L’Artiglio e l’oro dell’Egypt(The Artiglio and the Egypt’s    Gold)


  • Reprinting of the volume “SO.RI.MA.” : documents of December 1932

  • Reprinting of the book “Viaggi nel mondo sommerso” (Travels in the Underwater World), by Ulderico Tegani

  • Restoration of the monument “Gianni’s Turret” (Diving cylinder designed by Alberto Gianni), now severely deteriorated. The restored Turret will be placed in the Viareggio Maritime Museum, and substituted with a reproduction or with a monument dedicated to the historical achievements of the Viareggio divers

  • Searching, from various sources, for objects, documents, etc. related to the Artiglio enterprises, to be donated to the Viareggio Maritime Museum
  • Evidencing and publicizing the vast amount of documents donated by the Gianni Family, relevant to the exceptional head diver Alberto Gianni
  • Awarding a fellowship to a well-deserving student of the Nautical School “Colombo” of Viareggio
  • Soliciting the interest of the city schools for the realization of a ceramic mural depicting the Viareggio divers, to be placed on the pier of the Viareggio harbor

  • diffusion by DVD:

- of the motion picture-diaporama “Artiglio... e il mondoapplaudì”   by Fulvia and Pier Luigi Bortoletto – awarded in 2005 at   the   International Festival of the Underwater Image of Antibes   (France)
- of the historical movie “Artiglio…….  evviva!” by Mario Poletti

  • Launching of an European competition entitled: “A Ship for a Museum”, having as subject the Artiglio ship, to be promoted by European Associations/Clubs of Naval Modeling

  • Printing of the 2nd Artiglio Notebook describing the Historical Maritime Museum of Viareggio, by Boris Giannaccini, dedicated to the students of elementary and secondary schools of Tuscany, to introduce the visit to the Museum

  • esting the Imperia, Genoa and La Spezia Rotary Clubs, cities particularly concerned with the Artiglio/SO.RI.MA. events, in projects, studies, and activities concerning the underwater world, to be elaborated in conjunction with the Artiglio Foundation Scientific Committee


  • Establishing closer contacts with Italian and European Rotary Clubs, and, through them, with institutions, associations, Rotarian organizations, companies or individuals, with the purpose of divulging and promoting the ideals and aims of the Artiglio Europe Foundation


  • Promoting conferences, and shows dedicated to the knowledge and research of the underwater world
