The ARTIGLIO EUROPE FOUNDATION was created by an initiative of the Rotary Club Viareggio Versilia (District 2070). The Foundation owes the name "Artiglio" to the ship of the SO.RI.MA. (Company for Maritime Recovery) of Genoa, which, carrying on board divers from Viareggio, earned world acclaim for its recovery operations in the Mediterranean and the Atlantic sea during the period 1920-1940. |

The Foundation, in the spirit of the International Artiglio Award instituted in 2001 by the Rotary Club Viareggio Versilia, intends to honor the values of the great European maritime tradition, and to foster and maintain the memory of the legendary enterprises of the ship "Artiglio" and of its divers, with initiatives following the Rotarian spirit, oriented in the European setting.
The Foundation's primary purposes and objectives are:
- To encourage and subsidize studies, research and activities in the following sectors of the underwater world: Oceanography, Marine Archaeology, Wreck Recovery, Hyperbaric Medicine, Marine Biology and Ecology, Sports, Diving Equipment, Publications, Journalism, TV shows, Motion Pictures;
- To support protection and respect of the marine environment, thus also ensuring the survival of mankind on our planet;
- To promote the Viareggio Nautical Historical Museum, and to propagate the knowledge of the significant maritime values and traditions of the city;
- To acknowledge and honor the merits of persons, corporations and organizations for important and original underwater exploits, both at a national and international level.

Supporters of the Foundation are institutions, associations, Rotarian organizations, companies or individuals that, by acknowledging the aims and purposes of the Foundation, make a financial contribution or a donation to the Foundation.
Friends of the Foundations are institutions, associations, Rotarian organizations, companies or individuals that, by acknowledging the aims and purposes of the Foundation, make a financial contribution aimed at realization of a particular initiative.
